This metaphor 'Tree of Wisdom' can serve as a powerful lens to explore the unique experiences of those of us on the autism spectrum. Much like nurturing a tree, we grow through life's challenges and triumphs. My early struggles included small talk and forming connections. However, they acted as deep roots that helped to anchor me, building resilience and shaping my understanding of the world.

This episode was inspired by an insightful video I recently watched on YouTube that encourages older generations to undertake their own ventures. This can include sharing any wisdom from lived experiences. While I didn’t mention the channel’s name on air, I'm including a link to the video here.
In this episode, I mention important milestones that have defined my journey. For instance, transitioning from high school to sixth form brought language and communication challenges that often led to me feeling isolated. Yet, these experiences have become the sturdy roots of my identity, teaching me valuable lessons that I now look to share with others facing similar hurdles.
As my story unfolds, the trunk of our 'Tree of Wisdom' emerges, symbolising the strength we can build through setbacks. These can include failures that pave the way for creative breakthroughs, whether in writing, cooking, or other pursuits. These moments of perseverance bolster can bolster our confidence and propel us forward.
From this strong core, my interests branch out into diverse areas like astronomy and storytelling. Each branch reflects a unique perspective and innovative problem-solving, emphasizing that authentic communication. This can be the same for you too, be it through art, music, conversation or whatever. They can bridge gaps and foster deeper connections.
Finally, the canopy represents growth, acceptance, and thriving within our unique contexts. Just as trees adapt to their surroundings, we learn to navigate misunderstandings and embrace varied communication styles. There’s no single path to success. Our diverse and unique journeys, like leaves of different shapes and colours, add to the beauty of our collective wisdom.
I invite you to reflect on your own 'Tree of Wisdom'. Remember, wisdom, for me, isn’t measured by age, but by lived experiences. Please feel free to share your insights in the comments section below, whether through writing, conversation, or creative ventures. Together, it can be possible to help cultivate a community built on acceptance and support.

Based on my experiences, those of us with an autism spectrum disorder can experience difficulties when trying to develop in our own native language. This can be linked to our limited interest in, and how we may relate to other people. We may take literal and concrete views of things like idioms, metaphors, inferences, and […]

The metaphor of 'Acorns Produced at Different Stages' for me, captures neurodivergent growth. As an autistic individual, over time, I’ve learned that development doesn’t follow a standardised timeline. This can be compared to oak trees producing acorns when they’re ready. We grow in our own time. Growing up, societal expectations around milestones, including language, social […]
