Finding Confidence in the Garden: An Autistic Perspective

The power of using metaphors is, I often find, both interesting and essential in making more sense of neurodivergent life. In my latest podcast episode, I reflect on how clearing an overgrown hedge became a surprisingly meaningful metaphor for personal growth and self-confidence.

What started as a practical task. It had been deemed necessary to tackle a hedge that had grown out of control. This soon revealed emotional parallels. The tangled mess mirrored certain challenges for myself with autism in the past. These would be certain times when things felt rather overwhelming, and more difficult to manage.

The hedge took weeks to clear. But, what I decided to do was, break it down into more manageable steps,  cutting greenery, sorting and creating piles of wood, slowly working my way through it. That methodical approach reminded me how life’s challenges often need similar approaches. These can include small steps, steady progress, and patience over perfection.

By doing the work myself, I not only saved money but proved something to myself,  that I’m more capable than I often believe. The cleared space wasn’t just physical. It became more symbolic.  As well as space for new things in the garden, I felt even more belief in myself, whilst being reminded of certain challenges I’ve successfully faced.

The effect didn’t stop there. Mowing the lawn, pulling weeds, tidying the patio, and around the edges of the house, each task became part of a quiet momentum. Confidence, I discovered, doesn’t always come from big breakthroughs, but from consistent care, small wins, and knowing what to let go of and what to keep.

I believe there’s a strong connection between our outer environment and our inner state. As I created space outside, I noticed space opening up inside, for clearer thinking, more and newer ideas, increased motivation, and keeping and building self-confidence.

If you’re feeling stuck or overwhelmed, maybe there’s a “hedge” in your life too. Tackling it might be tiring, but you may well find you have more strength in you than you initially realised.

Want to hear a bit more about this? You can listen to the episode below.

Have you ever found confidence in an unexpected task like gardening, or maybe even something else entirely? I’d be interesting in hearing how you’ve made space for yourself, inside or out. Feel free to share in the comments or reach out with your thoughts. I always look out for your comments, and, if I see any, I'll aim to reply when I can.
