Planting Seeds in the Dark - Growth, Creativity & Unexpected InspirationPinInspiration can come to us unexpectedly, emerging from uncertainty or any challenges we may face. This idea of ‘planting seeds in the dark,’ mirrors my journey as an autistic individual learning to navigate figurative language. Creativity and understanding, I’ve found, don’t always appear instantly. They can develop quietly beneath the surface, given time and patience.

In my younger days growing up, I struggled with idioms and metaphors, not because I lacked understanding, but because my brain formed connections differently. I can’t say for sure whether this is true, but to me, it’s an intriguing possibility. Like seeds beneath the soil, these connections would have needed more time to grow. Visual thinking became my bridge to comprehension, helping me link abstract phrases to tangible imagery.

This led me to create a blog post of short idiom stories on my blog, the aim of which is to make figurative language more accessible. One of the stories, ‘Over the Moon,’ illustrates this approach. During it, there’s a character jumping so high with joy that they appear to leap over the moon. By transforming language into visual narratives, I believe I may have helped others see idioms in a new way, judging by my website analytics.

My latest idiom story,A Spring in Its Step,’ emerged during a run, where the changing season sparked inspiration. It reminded me that stepping away from creative pressure, whether through nature, art, or music, can allow ideas to emerge naturally. Creativity can thrive when given time and space to develop.

Beyond creativity, this concept applies to learning and personal growth. Struggling with academic challenges once made me have doubts about my progress. However, over time, I saw improvement. Growth happens beneath the surface, even when results aren’t immediately obvious.

Whether in creativity, academics, or personal challenges, trust that even in uncertainty, hope and potential are always present. The seeds we plant in darkness will bloom when the time is right.

Bearing Acorns in Your Own Time

The metaphor of 'Acorns Produced at Different Stages' for me, captures neurodivergent growth. As an autistic individual, over time, I’ve learned that development doesn’t follow a standardised timeline. This can be compared to oak trees producing acorns when they’re ready. We grow in our own time. Growing up, societal expectations around milestones, including language, social […]

  1. Such a beautiful metaphor! Just like gardening, creativity and personal growth flourish with patience, care, and the right environment. Excited to explore how inspiration can be nurtured.

    1. Thanks for your thoughtful comment. While my focus is more on language and creativity, I can see how gardening beautifully illustrates this idea of growth and patience. When I think about it now, I can see how planting seeds, both literally and metaphorically, can be a powerful way to reflect on this process. Have you or anyone you've ever known had a moment where nature inspired yours, or their own personal growth? This, I believe, could be done through gardening, or any other creative pursuits.
